Celebrating a clear lake senior with a photo session in downtown Clear Lake, Iowa, including meaningful stops at the Surf Ballroom and Fox House.


This summer’s weather kept us all on our toes, and Hudson’s senior session was no exception. After a few reschedules because of rain, we were finally able to sneak his session in between showers, and it turned out to be a beautiful evening for photos.

I had actually photographed Hudson before during a family session, so it was fun to reconnect. Sessions like this always feel a little more relaxed when there’s already some familiarity.


We started his senior session at a few of my favorite downtown spots around Clear Lake, Iowa, capturing a mix of classic senior portraits and more relaxed moments around town. One of the locations I often photograph seniors at ended up having an unexpected connection to Hudson’s family. As we were taking photos, we pointed out it was actually one of the places where his grandfather grew up. Moments like that make a session even more meaningful and remind me how special it is to capture photos in places tied to family history.


After exploring downtown, we made two quick but meaningful stops that are special to Hudson’s family, the iconic Surf Ballroom and the Fox House. These locations added such a personal touch to his senior photos and helped tell more of his story right here in Clear Lake. Then we stopped in front of the new Surf Music Experience Center, which ended up being one of my favorite photos from the entire session.


To wrap up the evening, we brought his siblings in for a few updated family photos. I always love when families take advantage of a senior session to capture those moments too. These years go by quickly, and it’s a great opportunity to preserve a few memories of siblings together before the next big chapter begins.


Senior sessions in Clear Lake are always special because they can include meaningful locations that tell a student’s story.

It was such a great evening celebrating Hudson and this exciting milestone, and I’m so glad we were able to make it happen despite the unpredictable summer weather.
