Senior Photography | Clear Lake, Iowa

Senior photos don’t have to feel overwhelming or overly planned. From choosing outfits and locations to figuring out what to do in front of the camera, I’ll help guide you through the process so your session feels relaxed, natural, and like you.

You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose

One of the biggest things I hear before senior sessions is some version of, “I don’t know what to do in front of the camera.” Good news, you don’t need to. I’ll guide you through different poses and prompts throughout the entire session, from where to put your hands to when to look at the camera (and when not to). We’ll keep moving, try different things, and make little adjustments along the way so nothing feels stiff or overly posed.

The Best Photos Start with Feeling Comfortable

When you feel comfortable, everything else tends to fall into place. I want senior sessions to feel easygoing, with plenty of time to settle in and get used to being in front of the camera. We’ll talk, move around, probably laugh when something doesn’t go exactly as planned, and keep going. Some of my favorite photos happen in those in-between moments when you’re no longer thinking quite so much about the camera.

Choose a Location That’s Meaningful to You

Your senior photos don’t have to happen at a location just because it’s a “pretty photo spot.” Some of my favorite sessions include places that already mean something to the senior, whether that’s the lake, family land, a farm, the football field, or somewhere tied to a favorite activity. Around Clear Lake, we also have so much variety within a short drive, so we can mix meaningful locations with a few different backgrounds to create a gallery that feels personal without everything looking the same.

Less Is More with Outfits

You don’t need to bring your entire closet to get variety in your senior gallery. A few well-planned outfits usually work best and give us plenty of different looks without spending half the session changing clothes. I recommend choosing outfits that feel different from one another, maybe something a little dressier, something casual, and one that feels especially like your everyday style. We can also think through which outfit works best with each location so everything flows naturally.

Stick with Styles That Feel Like You

Senior photos are not the time to feel like you need to completely reinvent your style. If you never wear dresses, you definitely don’t have to show up in one just because it feels like a “senior photo outfit.” Choose pieces you genuinely feel good in and that still feel like you when you look back at the photos years from now. Trends can be fun too, but I always recommend balancing them with a few classic pieces you already know you love.

Keep Details Clean and Intentional

The little things really do make a difference in photos. Wrinkle-free clothing, clean shoes, simple accessories, and removing hair ties from wrists can help keep the focus where it belongs. I also recommend thinking through undergarments with each outfit and making sure everything fits comfortably before the day of your session. Nothing needs to be perfect, but taking a few minutes to check those small details ahead of time can save us from having to fix them later.

A Relaxed, Natural Approach

You won’t spend your entire session standing still and smiling directly at the camera. We’ll mix in movement, different angles, natural expressions, and plenty of variety along the way. I’ll guide you when you need it, but I also leave room for those in-between moments that often end up being some of my favorites. The goal is a gallery that feels polished without every image feeling stiff or exactly the same.

Everything Is Planned with Intention

There’s quite a bit of planning that happens behind the scenes before a senior session. I think about the direction of the light, what time each location will photograph best, how much travel time we need, and which outfits will work well with each background. We may start downtown, head toward the lake, and finish in an open field at sunset, but the order is intentional. Planning those details ahead of time helps us make the most of the evening while still keeping the session itself relaxed and easygoing.
